Well it’s a novice day but it is a strong novice at Withington and there was plenty of drama out on the cross country with thrills and spills all around the track. The wind had dropped and the sun was out so it felt almost springlike and we only needed 3 layers of clothing minimum so we are getting there!
Jonelle had rather odd times and did each of her three novices one by one. Gino Gingerino had somehow ended up in an open novice section which was not the plan as he started the day with zero points and ON is for horses that have 21 points or more. A 32 dressage and a double clear with just 3.2 time saw Gino win his first ever BE points and 7th place and I think Jonelle really likes him! Tim has spent 2 years producing this horse.. who, I am sure Anona Young would not mind me saying, has had his ‘ginger’ moments and Jonelle is now setting up a partnership with him which is reaping rewards. The guys are doing a bit of swapping at the moment and as Tim has taken over Emotion ( Emma) its good to see a 2 way traffic with Gino coming to Jonelle! Fair play to Tim.. two years with Gino and Jonelle goes and gets his first points..
Next up was Curly Girl who really wowed the judges for a stunning 18 dressage. She then showjumped clear which was cool and although green cross country and took a bit of hand holding from Jonelle she went clear and added 13 time for eventual 6th. Curly is gong to be a superstar in the future for sure.. she has it all, the wow factor, the jump, scope, carefulness and the fabulous paces but the production of a star in the Price regime is a calculated one. It is the slow road that wins the ultimate prizes ( and we are talking Badminton, Luhmuhlen, Burghley here ) and 2019 is about establishing her at this level.
Faerie Magnifico (George) has quite the reputation to live up to as his half siblings Faerie Dianimo (Maggie May) have won Luhmuhlen 5 star and Xavier Faer ( Hugo) is lying 3rd in Kentucky 5 star as I write and has been 3rd at Badminton. George fair strutted his stuff in the dressage for a super test that was even smarter than his 25 at Larkhill but the judge scored it as a 31 which was a tad disappointing and then went onto the SJ to nail a clear which included a tough treble which was his nemesis at Bicton.
The cross country saw George seriously step up! It was big and bold and George galloped his socks off! He went straight everywhere and looked the real deal as he emulated his half brother and sister and attacked every question with the verve we have come to expect from the Brockenhurst Babes. He is a funny mix of Hugo and Maggie May.. he has the small body of Maggie May but the Hugo mentality of being a tad bolshy on the ground and not quite as smart as he thinks he is!
